A Savvy Shopper's Guide to Bargains, Deals, & Freebies

TODAY: $1 day at the Dallas Zoo! July 15, 2010

TODAY! Get your cooler, sunscreen, and big ‘ol floppy hat ready — and don’t forget the camera too! TODAY THURSDAY, July 15, 2010, is $1 admission day at the Dallas Zoo!

My advice is to get there as the gates open. Arrive at 8am sharp to avoid a parking and traffic zoo (no pun intended) or make it an adventure by taking the DART Red Line. Wear the comfiest shoes you have, and pack the kids’ bathing suits, water shoes, water hats, and towels because you’ll want to take them to the “brook” in the Lacerte Children’s Zoo for a splashing good time!

Per their press release, “Dollar deals will be available at the Zoo throughout the day, including $1 food items such as hot dogs, chips, popcorn, and snow cones on Cat Green and $1 frozen treats near the exit. The Zoofari Market will have great deals on drinks and snacks and big bargains on souvenir items.”

Though the air-conditioned cafe in the middle of the zoo has tasty treats, I recommend packing your own lunch so you can munch on healthy fare as you go (carrots make an easy snack!). Bring your water bottles and refill them at the water fountains! The zoo is very wagon- and stroller-friendly, so that’s an easy way to haul your stuff! Oh, and did I mention to bring sunscreen? Just don’t forget to reapply it. They sell it in the gift shop if you happen to forget.

Want an even better experience? Download their FREE iPhone Dallas Zoo app! This should make navigating your visit at the zoo even easier.

The $1 admission is an amazing deal! If you plan to return a few more times in the next year, I urge you to consider a Dallas Zoo membership. You’ll get free parking (a $7 value per visit), free admission, gift shop discounts, and tons of other perks depending on the membership you choose. Dallas Zoo memberships make FABULOUS gifts! That’s how we got our first membership to the Dallas Zoo — my parents gave it to us as a Christmas gift. And it is the best kind of gift — no need to dust it, clean it up, or exchange it for a different size!

Have you heard about their amazing new Giants of the Savanna habitat that opens Memorial Day weekend? My kids and I have had such a fun time watching this habitat being built, and we visited Gypsy and Jenny, the zoo’s elephants, in their old habitats for the last time last week. The elephants have moved to the new 11 acre habitat and joined the new elephants successfully! The giraffes are next to move, and then when the habitat opens, we’ll be able to FEED the giraffes! How cool will that be?!?

$5 Child Admission to SeaWorld Florida, California, & Texas! May 3, 2010

I don’t know about you, but whenever I see sea creatures, I am in just complete awe. If only I had that kind of grace in the water — or on the land for that matter!

SeaWorld is running an AWESOME promo deal right now through their SeaWorld Cares program. You can purchase a child’s ticket for SeaWorld Florida, California, or Texas for just $5 with the purchase of a full-price adult ticket — and those tickets are good through the end of 2010! Even better, 100% of the $5 admission for your kiddo (ages 3-12) will be donated to a wildlife conservation effort of your choice (from their list).  Just make the purchase online and then print your ticket(s) at home, and avoid the entry lines at the park!

Here are the links for this deal!

Expires: The tickets expire December 31, 2010

Thanks, Cheryl P.!

PERFECT holiday gift: “adopt” a zoo animal December 5, 2009

What do you get the person who really doesn’t need anything else? Here’s the PERFECT gift! “Adopt” an animal from your local zoo on their behalf.

I gave the gift of a pair of lovebirds to my grandparents last year (who had been married for 68 years!) and they thought it was simply fabulous. Check with your local zoo on their “adoption” program, or check out the one at The Dallas Zoo.

According to The Dallas Zoo’s site, “Parent Benefits” include:

  • “A personalized Adoption Certificate with a color photo of your animal.
  • A Zookeeper’s Report, filled with information about your animal.
  • Periodic mailings about the Zoo and the Aquarium.
  • A special invitation to the annual Adopt Parents’ Party.
  • A listing on the Adopt Parents’ Honor Roll at the Dallas Zoo.”

All of this for just $25 to $2,000 per year — something for every budget! And, your gift is tax-deductible. That’s a win, win, win!

Here are the “adoption” sites for some zoos across the country:
